We will build a Hub City of Asian Culture where people from around the world celebrate Gwangju’s culture.
Greetings.
I am Kim Wonjoong, Chairperson of the Presidential Committee on the Development of the Hub City of Asian Culture.
The Hub City of Asian Culture Development Project is a national initiative centered on Gwangju that seeks to strengthen the cultural capacity of the Republic of Korea, share Asia’s rich cultural resources, and broaden our cultural horizons.
Building on the values of this meaningful development project, the Committee is devoting all its efforts to achieving the following three key policy goals.
First, we will serve as a vital stepping stone toward building a “City of Asian Cultural Exchange” that engages with the world. We will create a city where the diverse cultures of Asia come together, engage in open dialogue, and inspire new creative work through research and education. To this end, we will provide unwavering policy support and cooperation to help the National Asian Culture Center(ACC) fulfill its role as a global cultural hub.
Second, we will provide steadfast support for a “City of Asian Peace and the Arts” that celebrates peace through culture and the arts. We will carefully develop policies that protect artists’ creative environments so that Gwangju’s spirit of K-democracy can flourish through culture and the arts. We will lay the foundation for a city where artists can give free rein to their imaginations and citizens can enjoy high-quality cultural experiences in their daily lives.
Third, we will become architects of change for a “Future-Oriented Cultural Economy City” that drives new growth. We will formulate and carefully review medium- and long-term strategies so that content industries combining culture and the arts with advanced technology can bring renewed vitality to the local economy. We will create a sound economic model in which creative ideas generate quality jobs and new industries, and the resulting benefits return to citizens in the form of happier lives and a richer cultural environment.
The successful implementation of these three policy goals will elevate the cultural competitiveness of the Republic of Korea to new heights.
The Hub City of Asian Culture can be fully realized only when the keen interest and active participation of the Committee, the central government, local governments, and citizens come together. We hope this website will become an open forum for communication that shares the latest developments in the project and welcomes your valuable views.
The Presidential Committee on the Development of the Hub City of Asian Culture will always walk alongside you toward a peaceful future inspired by culture and illuminated by the arts. Thank you.
